Gag Order: The Dangers Of Free Speech In The Muslim World

Filed under: blogging, censorship — Peaceful Me @ 1:03 pm

I have had a few problems over the years that I have been blogging regarding free speech. I’ve had to delete posts or make certain posts with personal information private and password protected. Unfortunately due to some recent events (while I was out of town and not online), I have had to make almost all my posts password protected. The greatest threat comes from so-called “Muslim” extremists who have linked my blog with a locally based forum that I and a number of friends and acquaintances frequent. Someone with the nom de plume “Kenneth Sterling” has identified me as among “Treacherous Three: Zio-Crusaders, Modernist Muslims, and Disinformationists” and labeled me a Rand employee, “stooge Muslim”, “CIA”, and “Zionist Informant” — none of which are true. In fact, a good part of the article deals specifically with me as an educator and blogger (you can read the article here) :

“If you look closely at the statements of some of the bloggers here, you will recognize that despite their proclaimed religion, they are undoubtedly on the payroll of the Crusader governments (i.e. FBI or CIA) or on that of the Zionist RAND Corporation. For example, one of the bloggers claims to be a Muslim and claims to follow the Qur’an, yet she openly rejects the statements of the Prophet Muhammad (i.e. ahadeeth) asserting that they are man-made. She says:

“…Much of woes of Muslim women will be over if we follow Qur’an rather than these ahadith. Women lost in ahadith what they had gained through Qur’an.” http://peacefulmuslimah.wordpress.com [NOTE TO READERS: I was quoting another writer here as noted and linked to in the original post]

She also says:

“…Since that is impossible (i.e. that you understand the meaning and context of the hadith) I can only assume that you pay more attention to the Hadith (which are MAN-made, not GOD-made) than the Quran. I do not. I believe what is clearly stated by God: There is no compulsion in religion…You are free to follow men (i.e. THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (sws)) if you like. I will do my best to follow Allah…And yes, I believe in Hadith. I do not place them above Quran, though. http://peacefulmuslimah.wordpress.com {NOTE TO READERS: I was expressing a personal opinion; obviously Muslims are not allowed to have personal opinions]

“I truly am not convinced that covering my hair is REQUIRED.”

Well, according to the Qur’an itself and basic teachings of Islam, both Qur’an and hadeeth are Revelation from Allah which must be followed.

“Nor does he (Muhammad) speak of his own desire. It is only a Revelation revealed.”
(Quran, Sura An-Najm, 53:3-4)

Moreover, anyone who rejects either the Qur’an or the authentic ahadeeth is committing an act which expels him from the religion because he is rejecting Allah’s Revelation. The Qur’an specifically makes many statements strongly forbidding people from trying to make a distinction between the Qur’an and the teachings of the Messenger, and from opposing his legal verdicts and his way.

“Verily, those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers and wish to make distinction between Allah and His Messengers (by believing in Allah and disbelieving in His Messengers) saying, “We believe in some but reject others,” and wish to adopt a way in between. THEY ARE IN TRUTH DISBELIEVERS. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment.” (Quran, Sura An-Nisa, 4:150)

“And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad) after the right path has been shown clearly to him…We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell – what an evil destination. (Quran, Sura Nisa, 4:115)

“…And let those who oppose the Messenger’s (Muhammad’s) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah, ahadeeth) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthuakes, killing) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.” (Quran, Sura Al-Furqan, 24:63)

This same blogger is also one of the most zealous propagators of RAND Corporations’ strategies (i.e. to go into the education system and persuade the Muslim children to abandon the Islamic Sharia’). Despite the fact that she is always claiming to believe in and follow the Qur’an, she openly declares that she rejects certain teachings in it and she calls the Muslim youth to reject it as well, under the guise of ‘critical thinking’.

For example, the Qur’an teaches that the Jews are the worst in enmity towards Muslims, and that Muslims should not take them as auliya (i.e. friends, protectors, or allies) or they will become one of them.

“Verily the ones who have the most enmity towards Muslims are the Jews and the pagans.” (Surah Al-Maida, 5:82)

“Oh you who believe do not take the Jews and Christians as auliya (allies, protectors, confidents, friends), they are but auliya of each other. And if anyone from amongst you does so, then he is from amongst them.” (Surah Al-Maida, 5:51)

““Oh you who believe if you obey a group of the People of the Book they will render you as Kafirs after you have believed.” (Surah Al Imran, 3:100)

Yet this same Muslimah condones taking Jews and Christians as professors, teachers, and friends. She says:

“Well of course there are Jewish Professors in EC! And what is wrong with that? Need I remind Muslims that we are anjoined by Allah to be respectful to the People of The Book? “

I used to think that the only real fear I faced blogging was from someone who knew my personally and didn’t like what I wrote about my personal life or the society I am living in. Now I see that the danger is potentially deeper than that and could threaten my employment or even my freedom. I get a lot of readers who find my blog when searching for issues facing Muslims; political issues in the US and/or the Arab world; or want to know what life is like in Qatar/the Arabian Gulf. I speak for no one except myself and have never claimed to do anything but express my own opinions. However, as much as it grieves me to do so, I feel I must make all these posts private through password protection so I cannot be accused of being part of a “Zio-Crusader” plot to infiltrate the education system in the Arab world.

On another note, I can no longer embrace without question this faith called Islam and whether it is for me or not. When I became a Muslim I was not taught that I would be forced to give up my rights to think for myself and express my ideas freely. Now I know differently. The sad irony is that if I had never converted, I would be granted a lot more freedom of thought and speech, as I would be considered just another kaffir who hasn’t “seen the light”.

  2. Salaam,

Wow, this Kenneth Sterling guy sounds like a nut! He also can’t write to save his life…

I’m sorry this is making you stop public blogging:( I’m still not exactly sure why though? Did he reveal your name, or are you worried that now that your blog was linked to some Qatar forum, that someone will out you to your employer? Since you always were detailed in your blog, I guess I assumed people already knew who you were.

I’m sorry that these type of extremists and weirdos make you not want to be Muslim. I hope you can continue to write your thoughts somewhere and come to your own conclusions.

Personally, I think repressing freedom of thought only makes people turn away from religion. If I couldn’t question and challenge, and search for answers, I would be a worse Muslim for it, in my opinion. I can read the Qur’an for myself, I certainly don’t need the likes of Kenneth Sterling to tell me what it says. Allah gave me a brain to use, not to waste!

InshAllah I hope this does not cause you any further problems in your work/personal life. I wish you all the best!

  3. The lovely UN “human rights” stacked with Islamic countrys has passed a non-binding resolution that covers this very topic. By that resolution some of the very things you’ve blogged about could get you in deep shit.

    You can not question!

  4. Salaam,
    Yeah that’s too bad. :(
I’m in the same boat, I also feel that I can no longer just accept everything without question…

  5. I don’t think anyone can realy force anyone out of Islam. Sure they can be a catalyst but the will to be a Muslim or to choose not to be Muslim really resides inside one’s soul.

I think if you want to be a Muslim and have whatever opinions you chose to have, no one can really push you out of that position, unless you let them.

    It’s your choice.

Why should your religous views threaten your employment?

Is your employment based on your religious views? I would think that very odd.

Anyhow, I hope all the best for you sister!

I think sometimes muslims need to understand that when a person converts to Islam in a later part of their life, that brings w/ it a lot of challenges that aren’t necessarily there when you convert as a young’in.

In Islam we are supposed to give ‘naseeha’ but no where does it say to BADGER, HARASS and generally make another person’s life miserable.

I disagree with much of what you say, but at the end of the day, I have the right to give you my opinion respectfully, try to convince you out of your view and NOTHING more.

I don’t need to make your life a living hell. You are your own person and God has given you the choice to choose to live the way you so choose.

Some people don’t quite get that.

  7. Naureen,

My job can be threatened because I live and work in Qatar — a Gulf Arab country that seems to be somewhat hesitantly moving backwards lately in terms of opening up, freedom of expression and religious freedom. While I never bring my political or religious views into the classroom — and in fact do not even let students know I blog — I am relatively easily identifiable in this very small country and a relatively high profile position. American freedoms don’t mean anything in an American university in a country where those freedoms are feared.

    Salaam Alaikum,
    PM

  8. Salaam.

These “people” have forgotten that Islam means submission to Allah, not another man with a turban.

  9. Its understandable that the hardliners would fear and hate the reformers more than they do the apostates. I don’t think you need to bring political or religious views into your classroom to create a percieved threat. The subject matter itself is threatening to paranoid isolationists. Its sad how many people are pushed away from their faith by these types. On the bright side, leaving ones faith can be as satisfying as adopting it in the first place. The ex-muslims I talk to experience enlightenment twice.

  10. Why would you accept everything without question? Humans have brains, Muslim or not, and they were bestowed upon us for a reason. And how can you have patience with that of which you have no understanding?

I hope your answer becomes clear for you, PM.

  11. Wow. Im surprised that you would let people intimidate you to the point of doubting your religion.

We are supposed to use our brains, not keep them in a jar.

In any case PM, I am very sorry for what you are going through. If I thought Islam was what so many people say it is, I wouldn’t be muslim.
My advice to you is to remember what brought you to Islam in the first place. For so many, critical thinking is a large part of what brought them to islam in the first place.
    Hugs and wasalaam.

  15. Asalamu Alaykom PM,

Whatever good you found in Islam can stay with you and whatever bad you found with Muslims, you can discard. You’ve been through a lot and I know this more than most.

I still love you through all the years. I still think of you as my sister. Wallahi. This love I have for you is real. You remember how you called me when Mr. Boo was hospitalized? That phone call meant a lot to me. You are a very kind…too kind to some…loving, intelligent woman. You deserve better than what you’ve had. You have been in my prayers many times.

Those who love you, from the wide array of religions, cultures, and dispositions, wish you the best.

  20. OK so I am not a Muslim. Nor am I really a Christian (was christened as a kid). I am a largely secular guy who subsribes to his own personal spiritual values. Hey; what a surprise those values of personal honesty, love and understanding of one’s humanity are mostly the same as most of the world faiths!
It took me ages using Google that allowed me to ‘browse’ censorship and find a refreshing site as this with genuine views of proper people that give a *&^* (thing) about stuff. It Should be easier than this to use the Internet!
Looking at the entries on this blog I think most have moved on from the Goggle tag that brought me here, like I said; to discuss censorship.
It is quite ironic given the state of The State’s desire to censor Islam from the populous (bless ‘em!) that I find this site given to me by Google (yeah, cheers corporate politically controlled folks!)
Any how. The point I am trying to make is that no matter who you are, what your faith is, and how your values are shaped, I am one of many british caucasian male’s of thirty something (mind your own business of exactly how old!) who frankly dont care what religion anyone serves.
We are people, all of us. A cliche but true. Love is what ultimately creates well being and favour with God. God is love and true humanity is the search for understanding love and making love your primary reason for being.
Do that and you will die in the arms of God. Dont do it and you will not burn in hell. That is a silly notion. Those who live their lives devoid of understanding love will have wasted their chance to experience the whole point of what makes us what we are and what makes human’s whole. Maybe that is what Hell is? That makes me sad because lots of people these days are dying without understanding love. We should pray for people who do not understand love and its power, not condemn them. Most religions condemn them because these people do not subscribe to a law or set of religious rites. I think that is wrong.
I’m not even saying that Islam does that but I know that most religions are obsessed with proving they are the correct religion and all others are fakes. Ha Ha, Christianity is so bad for that. How many innocent people have been killed for saying stuff like I am?! Spanish Inquisition for example! Wow, horrible stuff. Thnakfully we have moved on a tad.
The point is that these ideas are politically motivated. Islam is being portrayed these days as a false idol and as such Muslims are quite rightly defending their faith.
Such divides are tragic because all this does is fuel resentment against those who are ‘NOT LIKE US’; whoever ‘us’ is.
Like I said, and forgive me for going off on a tangent or two, but at the end of the day (how british is that!) I know why I am alive. It is because of God. He made me be me. That’s the whole point. We all love the same God. Some of us just have not got it yet. Some never will.
I yearn for a time when we all do. One day we will stop trying to ram each others belief’s down each other’s necks and just live our lives together. CPure Capitalism does not work, neither does pure Socialism. Take the best from both camps and bingo! It aint perfect but it is a start. Continuous improvement from that basis will succeeed. God Bless.

    A bloke.

PS If u think what I have said is rubbish, fair play. I am not a scholar nor am I qualified in any sense of the word. I am just saying what I feel. Discuss or disregard as you see fit.
