Political Pandering: Why Do They Do It?

Filed under: Indecision 2008, politics — Peaceful Me @ 3:23 am

I’ve always had respect for John McCain’s military service and his willingness to march to his own drummer in his earlier days in Congress. But I can’t help but feel queasy when I read about him pandering to Pennsylvania voters in Newsweek:

For John McCain, memories seem to be malleable things.

Take yesterday, for example. Stumping in Pittsburgh, Penn., the Republican presidential nominee told KDKA-TV that the first thing that comes to mind when he thinks of Steel City is its football team. “The Steelers really made a huge impression on me, particularly in my early years,” he said. In fact, the impression was so huge, added McCain, that when “he was first interrogated [as a POW in Vietnam] and really had to give some information because of the pressures, physical pressures on me, I named the starting lineup, defensive line of the Pittsburgh Steelers as my squadron mates.” “Did you really?” asked the reporter. “Yes,” McCain said. “Could you do it today?” asked the reporter. “No, unfortunately,” McCain said.

In his own memoir Faith of My Fathers McCain went on record saying he gave the names of the Green Bay Packers offensive starting line — which has also been noted in the A&E special of the same name. In fact, this is something that McCain has mentioned on several occasions and yet in the face of this snafu, his campaign is saying it was a case of faulty memory. Maybe so, but it sure seems to be convenient faulty memory when he was campaigning in PA — and rather smacks of political pandering to me.

  1. And its what all Americans are hoping for…to switch from a pres that makes up stuff to start a war…to one that has a faulty memory…this just gets better and better…sheesh.

  2. All candidates have made such errors. You have the story with Hillary and the sniper fire and Obamas uncle that helped free Auswitch. I do not think they are lying on purpose. They know that their opponents are going to check everything they say. They can not win the presidential elections in the US by holding fact oriented speeches, they are expected to hold speeches that connect to the audience, doing that several times a day for almost a year your memory is going to fail you at times. Your memory is not a static quantity you draw facts from, it is a dynamic thing that is influenced by the situation you are in.

It is much easier for politicians in Denmark than in the US, we do not demand such emotional connection to our politicians.

If you are able to connect to different groups in different situation day after day for a year, without compromising you integrity you are not a politician but a holly man.

Maybe that is the flaw? Americans are not asking for a politician but a savior?

You should not judge the candidates by their campaign it is much more relevant to judge them by their views before they started campaigning.

  4. I think this year more than others the voters are looking for a straight talker. McCain has proven to be so in the past, like when he told the autoworkers their jobs weren’t coming back. It is disappointing to see him get caught pandering.

  5. Salaams PM:

Is it political pandering or old age, lol? Probably a bit of both.
