Al hamdulillah, a good day

Filed under: depression, self-absorption — Peaceful Me @ 12:40 am

I had one, I mean; the kind that reminded me of what it can be like when you’re not struggling against the weight of depression.

I got up early enough to take my meds on time and prepare to get to the therapist at a reasonably leisurely pace — which is amazing in Doha traffic. Then I had a good session with her — lots of strategy talk that insha’Allah will report on in a few days. I’d had the foresight to call a friend of mine and ask her out for coffee after the therapist, so I headed back across town to pick her up.

We spent the next 3 hours at the Villagio Mall — Starbucks, Carrefour and lots of walking! But more importantly — LOTS of laughing! What a great prescription that is!

When I got home I enjoyed catching up on emails and blog comments. Did I tell you guys how great you are? You are the best! TVdinner and I got into some funny exchanges and you see the results ;)

Then followed the therapist’s advice about a good late evening routine. First thing I did was get rid of all my ex-husband’s “products” out of his bathroom (to be fair, they are not even geneder related — just don’t like ‘em). Then I dug into my little stash of great bath products, candles and incense. I have now reorganized my larger hall bathroom (the one with the tub) and the ensuite bathroom in the “Ms. bedroom” (as opposed to Master). Yes! I now have 2 bathrooms and both are fully sticked with an assortment of face, body, hair, and foot products; not to mention the candles and incense. Yeeee-Haaaaa!

So the only thing to do at that point was put on my favorite opera (Turandot) and take a relaxing candlelit bath. Of course, I had to do some serious pumice work on my feet first, and I shaved my legs for the first time in a month, and I FEEL GREAT! I had gotten lazy and unmotivated about my physical state. I don’t mean to imply that I had let myself go completely — I wasn’t like a ripe Stilton- but I had not nurtured myself. And I did tonight and a generous application of white jasmine body lotion helped.

I poured myself a glass of iced green tea and should be in bed but I wanted to write this while it was fresh and you could maybe feel how uplifted my spirit is tonight.

Salaam Alaikum.

  1. I love good days in my current situation. they feel so rare to me and something so fleeting that I want to wrap my arms around that day and just cherish the moment. allow the goodness to seep into the cold recesses of my soul and warm me for whatever brief time it is…

Im glad you had a good day and Im even happier you blogged about it!! We all need that gentle nudge to nourish ourselves and recharge our batteries.

  2. That’s wonderful, PM! Uplifting to read, and now I’m almost inspired enough to attack my own feet with the pumice. Almost.

I have, however, been sufficiently inspired to add a DVD of my own favorite opera – Tosca – to my Netflix queue. After nearly confessing the shameful contents of my queue on an earlier post (Phew! Dodged a bullet, there!), I’ve been feeling the need to balance them out with something more edifying. In fairness, though, I’ve always thought of opera as being sort of a 16th century version of the Jerry Springer show. There’s a lot of wailing, lots of love lost/betrayed/found-while-the-heroine-dies-from-a-wasting-disease, and the occasional chair gets thrown. So maybe opera only counts as being moderately edifying. Still, it’s more satisfying than Dynasty re-runs.
